In a Dark Place
In a Dark Place (2006)

IMDB rating: 4.40

Plot: She thought she was their Guardian Angel, but was she really their Nanny from Hell? A chilling modern ghost story, inspired by a classic of the genre, In A Dark Place is the suspenseful, erotic story of a young woman fighting to redeem the souls of two children seduced by dark influences beyond the grave. Anna Veigh, a recently qualified art therapist and teacher, is finding work at her inner city special school a tougher psychological challenge than she can cope with. The offer of a new post minding two wealthy young orphans whilst their wealthy uncle is away on business seems a perfect escape for her. It is a welcome escape. Her new workplace is Bly House, a remote country estate with beautiful grounds and a small resident staff. Miles and Flora, the children, seem sweet and charming, if a little strange, and Anna thinks that she has really “landed on her feet” after the rigors of her previous job. The only fly in the ointment is the frosty estate manager, Miss Grose, who seems remote and unfriendly to the new arrival. Very soon, moreover, Anna makes disquieting discoveries. Miles, the boy, has been expelled from his school, for a sin so dreadful the headmaster will not even discuss it. Anna then learns that her predecessor in the job, one Miss Jessel, died in suspicious circumstances. To add to her unease, she begins to catch glimpses of unknown sinister figures lurking in the grounds, but nobody else admits to seeing them. Anna confronts the Miss Grose with her suspicions about these intruders, but is surprised by the force of Miss Grose’s reaction. The figures Anna describes are unmistakably those of two ex-employees at the house. The only problem is that these employees are dead. Anna senses that the ghostly manifestations are malevolent in their intent. Not only is the psychological welfare of the children in very real jeopardy, but their lives and their souls are also at risk. But Anna is forced to confront dark secrets buried deep in her own psyche as she fights to cleanse the children’s souls of darkness, with terrifying consequences for all concerned.

Come the next Fourth of July, just before the town’s annual carnival, the four teens all find themselves being victimized by a mysterious menace when they begin to receive intimidating calling cards indicating someone is aware of what happened before. The group suspect the cousin of the dead friend, only to discover they are very much on the wrong track. Can the friends survive and figure out the identity of their tormentor before they end up dead themselves?

I have a REALLY big problem(guy crush, good friend liking him, ect)?
Lemme start from the beginning(last year August 2008)
I met a guy at school, we started talking and I developed feelings(IDK WHY!) and then sometime March 2009 one of my closest friend told me she’s crushing on that guy. So, I kept my mouth shut, never said anything about me liking him. So, around April, he’d confessed he was bi and at that time, he was dating a dude. Then, I found out he dated a girl named Anna I didn’t actually talk to till summer 2009, for about a months and broke up. He found out the guy he was dating was a rapist, yada, yada, yaadada and doesn’t goes online anymore. So, I was talking to Anna during the summer and we’d became AWESOME friends <333 But near the ending of summer….she told me she is in LOVE with my bff…..She talks about how they exchange letters about the past and the guilt of them breaking up, ect. I KNOW he likes her by the way he acts and stuff. I encourage her to ask him out like any good friend would do. So today….he told him.
this is what they said:
She said….
"I’m sorry I didn’t tell you anything. I am sorry that I couldn’t tell you, but I bet you already know this. It’s pretty obvious, what I was telling jen. I just didn’t want you to know. But if you must know then, your for a hell of a ride.

(dude’s name), you probably know this, but I like you. I always have. But Dont worry, I know your answer, and have always known it for this very day. No. I accept that and always will like I did when we broke up. I know you will never like me back no matter what. I know you can’t have a girlfriend either, because of the accident. But I can wait, I can always wait for you. even if the one you love who makes you happy is not me. I understand, I hope though you will find the one you love. I will never make you try to like me either. I am not cold hearted like that. I want to cry, but I don’t want you to pity me. This hurts me, because I didn’t want to tell you, but now you must know the truth. I will always treat you the same even if I have feelings for you still. I don’t want you to worry either, because I hate it when you do. I will always wait no matter what.

I was planning to tell you these words to you on valentines day… Face to Face, but— you heard me talking about it to jen, and I didn’t want you to know. It was a surprise but you over reacted thinking I was talking false words to you. I’m sorry that I like you, but I’ll get over it, because your my friend and always will be. There I told you what I was saying all along. I wanted to confess so many times, but I didn’t find the right words, and when I did, I never did have the courage. I gained my courage to tell you on Valentines day, but never mind. I feel like a idiot because of this. Don’t worry, I understand you will never like me, so save your breath. I do hope you find the one you love though, even if its not with me.

I’m going to go now, and cry because I never had the guts to tell you this in person… Now you know (dude’s name), now you know.."

He said…
"Don’t go so I can tell you something. Just wait..

Please don’t cry. Please, or I will. Look, I DID know. I wanted you to tell me because I wanted you to get some courage, like you always had. I was waiting because I wanted you to stand up and be brave. But it was for the worst… All I did was hurt you. I do like you, but I can’t because I’m not gonna entangle you in all my problems and I’m not gonna get you depressed! That’s all I’ve been doing, bringing you down, because I can’t be happy so that just depresses you, and sorry for being this way all the time, so confusing, I just wish you’d stop keeping secrets from me and then telling other people. I love you so much… Don’t forget that. But I don’t want you to suffer. I’m sorry I rushed things, I didn’t understand you were actually waiting to tell me.
I’m sorry.
Can you just talk to me please?
Please!"

The worst part is I loved him more than a year now….I really need help.

Rate or hate my verse? 1 – 10?
Some kids come up here often in suits,
But i’m the first hood kid to get in ca-hoots.
Making more money for my family to make by,
My talent is spitting I can not lie.
What im a I doing I can lie but not in music,
This is the only way I will choose it.
These other rappers here can not touch me,
I do this for hip hop and such okay?.
Rap lyrics flow threw my veins I am mastered,
Ready to spit any minute on a bastard.
This is my poetry my own damn way,
I don’t do it for chains or rocks in any way.
Don’t you get it that my music is my legacy,
Just doing shows for kids that beg to see.
Dropping lyrics like the A bomb on hiroshima,
This is my way to tell everyone I’ve been ya.
I’ve probably been in every bodies shoes,
Yeah I’ve gotten props but I got also got boos.
My music is never for the fancies,
Its from heart and for the enjoyable CD’s.
Its the shit you listen to when you mad,
The Shit you listen to when you sad.
That’s is the straight up shit I want to make,
The kind of crap you get from a fortune cookie or a cake.
The realist shit you will ever get from anyone,
Music that starts as poetry mix with beats its done.
I do it for hip hop the shit that I rap,
The shit that I do for my fans not no Auto-tune crap.

Parents: Do you agree with this? Last night on "Nancy Grace" they were…?
following the murder/rape of a little girl named Shaniya (perhaps you have heard). Long story short, her mother sold her into prostitution (supposedly) and she ended up dead.

Someone called in and was commenting on the fact that this mother was on welfare and received cash benefits (among other things) for this child. The caller said that welfare should investigate all of these children from "welfare" homes to make sure they are being treated properly. Nancy Grace agreed.

Okay, I am a welfare nazi because I have seen SO many people abuse the system, but at the same time I do not think these people don’t love their children, or are unfit.

How do you feel about the state investigating families based on social status (those on public assistance)? Do you think it is any more likely that a child from a poor home is being abused as opposed to a child with a privileged life?

I am not sure where I stand, I am just curious to see the answers to this !!!

"How do you feel about the state investigating families based on social status"

Horrified.

There already seems to be a fair bit of this going on in the US going by the Q&A here about WIC, which is…weird, the amount of testing and ‘advice’ WIC recipients are subjected to.
Dyot | Nov 20, 2009

I’m not sure where I stand either…

But I work for a locality in this type of agency and I can tell you this – we do not have the man power OR money to be able to afford to do this type of investigation right now. We had to lay off a bunch of people at the beginning of this fiscal year – and it’s looking worse for next fiscal year.
Johnny's Mommy | Nov 20, 2009

I think they should be investigated, but it has nothing to do with "social status" as you state, it has to do with the fact that they are receiving "government benefits". If they don’t want someone checking up on them, then they do not have to apply for and receive welfare. No one is forcing them to be on welfare, but if they choose to be, the must follow the rules (if that rule were in place, of course).

I have no issue with anyone receiving aid to be looked into to ensure that the money is being used for it’s intended purpose.
Parent | Nov 20, 2009

This happened in my state but I haven’t followed it closely. What I have read is that Shaniya lived with her father until around a month before she was killed. I don’t see how the mother would be getting benefits based on that. I think it is totally irrelevant anyway.

Oh, and supposedly this horrible mother is pregnant again. That is really disturbing.
jen | Nov 20, 2009

i have not looked at the statistics. it would not totally surprise me if they showed that abuse is somewhat more common in low-income homes, because poverty puts a lot of additional stresses on a family (also because abuse in higher-income families is less likely to be noticed and more likely to be swept under the rug by an expensive defense attorney when it is alleged). but even if abuse turns out to be more common in lower-income families, that doesn’t justify treating every low-income family like abusers, because they’re not. i’d be utterly opposed to opening child abuse investigations based on nothing but whether someone receives public assistance. lower-income people may also be statistically more likely to commit crimes like theft or drug use, but that doesn’t mean the police ought to be stopping at every house of someone receiving public assistance and conducting a search.

i think the expression is "innocent until proven guilty" and not "innocent until proven poor." we have this great system where we’re judged on our own actions, not statistics.
desmeran (emeritus) | Nov 20, 2009

Many people in the "system" so to speak are already subjected to a great deal of indignity and suspicion about their child-rearing. I’m a middle-class, middle-aged educated, married woman – were my son to accidentally fall and break his leg, it wouldn’t even occur to me to worry that CPS would get involved. I am pretty sure that isn’t the case for a lot of people who don’t fit into those categories and I don’t think they are being paranoid. If you’re young, poor, uneducated, with an unstable situation you are already WAY more likely to be "investigated."

None of us would probably come out perfect from direct scrutiny on our child-rearing. It would be pretty upsetting if Children’s Services knocked on my door last week when I was sick – house a mess, baby eating crappy baby snacks, TV on, laundry piled up. It was not a pretty picture.

Such a policy would only discourage people who NEED these services in order to have any chance at all of raising their children well from seeking them.

The Shaniya story is quite disturbing, I admit. But part of why it’s disturbing is that almost NO ONE can imagine how a mother, however unfit could possibly do such a thing to their daughter. I mean, I am sure there are lazy, drug-addicted, neglectful moms out there who would never in a million years sell their children into prostitution. Nothing can be abstracted from this story – it is too uniquely horrible.
dmg | Nov 20, 2009

that little girl was from Fayetteville, NC. i used to live there for 13 years and my family knew of her family. we all weren’t best buddies but we knew each other. we never expected any thing like this to happen. it was a complete shock. Shaniya always looked well taken care of. investigations would help..but some people always manage to dodge the bullet.
Shannon *Due 4/11/2010* | Nov 20, 2009

All that I can say is that in America, the right to be a legal, tax-paying working citizen comes with a price -tag, and that is having wages garnished, and the infamous reckoning to the IRS annually, so (to me) it would only make sense that those receiving government aid should be somewhat accountable for their finances as well.

Child-rearing accounts for quite a bit of spending.
In my home,legal/working/tax-paying citizens, if we were trying to claim something because of the children that turned out to be untrue, we would be guilty of fraud, and worst case scenario, depending on the fraud, would be facing charges of abuse and/or neglect.
Shouldn’t be any different for welfare homes.
Reckoning is reckoning.
Shouldn’t accept only the good, and then claim "special circumstances" to avoid penalties.
judo | Nov 20, 2009

A child can be abused in any home poor or rich. Their are kids from very rich families that get treated like sh*t. So no I don’t think because a person is on welfare their home should be investigated. Families that have money can hide abuse even better because they are better off financially.

All are going to be decent. Todays "Home" firewalls are certainly all good. While I wouldn’t run a business with them — well a midrange/larger business with them — they are ALL going to provide great firewalling capabilities. I’m a Cisco engineer so of course I’d lean that way. I personally use a 5505 @ home, but even though it has a decent GUI, it’s really for those of us who are command line driven. On the other hand, though I will never recommend Sonicwall to business customers, their firewalls are pretty decent and are all web driven in as far as configurations, etc.

I think that may be your best bet, unless you’ve had Cisco CLI experience before. Just my 2 cents worth.
