Cost of rail trip from New York to San Francisco in 1870s?
I want to know how much it cost, in money and time, for a traveler wanting to make the cross-country trip by train from New York to San Francisco back in the 1870s, before dining cars and Pullman cars, when trains had to stop for the night at Harvey Houses or similar establishments. How much did the train fare cost? How long did it take? How much did food cost? Any information, including links to websites or books about rail travel in that era, would be most appreciated. Thanks!

The Polar Express Conductor Hat?
I want to know where I can find a Polar Express Conductor hat. I’m not dressing up as a conductor or anything, so any old conductor’s hat just wont do. I want a LEGIT Polar Express Conductor hat, and I mean one that looks JUST like the real thing. I mean a conductor’s hat with the little label/ mini- plaque thing that clearly says: POLAR EXPRESS CONDUCTOR. If you know where I can get one, or possibly can give me instructions to make one that looks EXACTLY like it, YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!! PLEASEEEE!!!

It all started when buxom Sasha wanted to strip for him via web-cam. Alas, bra-less Sasha then found his address expecting the same service, while Rick’s wife was shopping. The second woman was The Stranger, who wanted sex in a gym and later threatened in vain to expose Rick if they break up. The third woman was park worker Beth who wanted sex in the wild. The fourth woman had sex with Rick in a hotel’s bridal sweet, letting her friend, no less than Susan’s identical twin, Jenny, secretly peep from the closet. The fifth woman Cora was slightly less buxom than Sasha, but actually wanted Rick’s wife home in another room. The sixth woman “Desiree” wanted him in a blindfold. The seventh and last woman Molly pretended delivering Rick pizza. Susan’s identical twin, Jenny, eventually reveals she became “Desiree” to trick Rick into sex. Rick wants to turn her in, but she pulls her gun out. Luckily, the detective forgot his pen.

Is a 6'4" soft surfboard right for me?
I’m a beginner with a few lessons under my belt … I saw this 6′4" soft surfboard today which somehow i felt very attracted to (for lack of better words). It’s confusing as the size seems small for beginner but being a softboard, seems right. I’m 50kg, 160cm. I know people keep saying I should ask the local shop assistant but the shop assistant wasn’t very helpful today and like I said somehow I felt this connection to the board – it’s like love/lust at first sight So i need strong reasons to encourage/discourage me to go ahed. Thanks!

Im not sure what size of foamie you learned on but chances are it would have been over 7ft, going down at this stage would be a major problem, you have to think about paddling and being able to catch waves…i really think that you will struggle on a 6′4 to catch your own waves…the instructor will not always be there and you will have to make all the actions to catch you own waves, on a 6′4 it will be too much trouble and your surfing will be effected

Go with a foamie that is 7ft and over and you will notice your surfing improve out of nowwhere
THE REAL DEAL SEX APPEAL | Feb 03, 2010

Welcome to surfing. What you need a surfboard that floats you well enough to paddle and catch a wave at your PRESENT SKILL LEVEL at YOUR PRESENT SIZE. I am really reluctant to recommend any particular board over the internet. I will say one thing. Just because you learned on a Foamie ( soft top board) doesn’t mean that you have to keep riding one. In fact, I would really discourage it. Why not buy an real board (used is okay) that suits your size, skill level and local waves. Foamies are great for kids to learn on, but after that, they really are no much more than toys.

Don’t waste your time on line, we don’t know anywhere nearly enough about you, or where you surf, how well you surf and we don’t have an opportunity to discuss these things with you. We aren’t your surfing buddies, we don’t necessarily surf where you or know anybody who does. Go to a good local surf shop (or a shop where ever you usually surf) and discuss your options with the folks in the shop. They can give you far better advice than anybody out here in ‘cyberspace’. And, just because you didn’t get a whole lot of assistance in one shop, don’t stop looking in other surf shops. As much as I always praise surf shops, like any other business, there are good ones and bad ones.

Please avoid popouts:
http://www.mckevlins.com/nopopstory.htm
Soft top boards are the "ultimate" popouts. But, like I said, they are great for kids to learn on.

I don’t know how old you are, but you also have to remember, teenagers grow, surfboards don’t. You can easily grow bigger and ride a smaller board, if your skill level keeps pace with your growth. If not, you have to think about how long do you really want to get out of that board.

Be careful about taking on-line advice from kids who may know less about surfing than you do, and the internet phonies.

Anybody who recommends a specific size or design of a surfboard to a stranger on line is foolish. Anybody who would take that advice is MORE foolish.

Good luck with your selection. I have been surfing since 1966, and it has been a lifetime of fun for me
I’m going to say it once again listen to john F that man speaks the truth.
Brian | Feb 03, 2010

The bottom line is you need a longboard to learn correctly and a 6′4 is not a longboard.

Bullmastiff temperament?
I`m owner of a 20mnts old bullmastiff. I got him at 3 mnts age and he came at our home very fearfull afraiding from everything. during his growth this changed but still remains that he refuses to be in contact with other people he treats them with suspicionsess and sometimes he barkes at them or run away. I know what will be the verdict- not enough socialization but it is not true.
On the other hand I like this suspisiconsness and I am sure that he will protect me because I`ve already took some lessons with Professional trainer and he is performing attack tasks very well .Obedience trainning is in finall stage where he walks (not on a leash ) on command "heel" next to me, sitting still in front grocery while I`m shopping and all the rest commands he is doing fine.
I`m affraid not end up with " fear biter" , I just want confident dog ready to protect me and my home and to be ready to took own decisions when I`m not arround.
I need advice pls.

"I know what will be the verdict- not enough socialization but it is not true."
There is ONLY 2 things this could be… 1, that it IS true… maybe he has just not been socialized in the correct manor.
or 2, its in his genes and he will never be able to be fixed, in which case you should never ever let him of a leash!

"performing attack tasks" !?!? this should not be done in till his fault issue has been fully rectified…..
This dog will not protect you, he may attack and bite some one because of fear, but only a self confident dog will actually protect.

Oh man, or did I miss the troll clues!
I’m about 27 years old and look really young for my age because I have never drunk, smoked or done drugs and never been in a night club or had lots of sexual partners.
I thought at least the pram would be a PUT OFF! I’m not really immature and I’m an asian girl..not even white or anything! I’m not that dark quite fair for an asian even when I wasn’t married at work a 18 year old had a big crush on me and I was 23 at the time!

What can I do or say to give my boyfriend comfort?
A little over a month ago I met this amazing man. We hit it off instantly and decided to see each other exclusively. The first 16 days were absolutely wonderful..then his Mom’s uncle died and sent his Mom over the edge. She is 83 years old and has Alzeheimer’s. It got so bad they had to hospitalize her…she became very angry and combative. His father is in his 80’s as well and is not dealing with all this (not wanting to eat, shower, shave etc.). My boyfriend lives 3 hours from his parents and his 2 siblings live 6 hours away. My boyfriend immediately left to go North to be with his parents. His siblings came the next day. He has been there for 3 weeks now and whenever I talk to him or text him (not very often because he has to not only be there for his Mom but is trying to help his Dad deal with it) he sounds so very sad, depressed and angry. Both of his siblings are married, and have went home a few different times to be with their families. My boyfriend is retired (as well as his brother although his brother is married) so he has been the one to stay there to help with his parents because he isn’t married. My boyfriend did say to me that he hoped I could give him a little time and to be please be stable for him. I told him I would be here for him no matter what and that he could call anytime night or day if he needed someone to talk to. It is so hard that he is 3 hours away….and his family doesn’t even really know anything about our relationship. We had decided to wait to involve family to see if our relationship was going to work. I don’t want to intrude on his family and we both agreed now is not the time to discuss our relationship with his family….he doesn’t need to worry about that right now. I backed off on calling him and texting him, allowing him to be the one to call or text when he was available, I Iet him know that I was doing this because he told me his brother was starting to ask all kinds of questions about "us" and my boyfriend has enough on his plate without having to go into details about our relationship. I know from his texts and talking to him that he is hurting so bad…..I feel helpless as to what to do because our relationship is so new. If we had been together longer I would definitely be there by his side. He has a very tender heart, however he has told me he has had to harden himself in order to deal with all this emotion with his parents. He is a family first type of guy and I have told him that I admire him for all that he is doing. He will be coming home today for a couple of days. I am so excited to be able to see him, however I am not sure how to respond to him. He has had to keep all his feeling bottled up inside of him..I want to be able to say the right things to him and do the right things as well to soothe him. He said he was looking forward to seeing me however he didn’t know what shape he was going to be in….I told him that it was ok, that I am happy just to be able to see him and be near him….I want these couple of days that he is home to be so relaxing and soothing for him…..Please if anyone has any suggestions about any thing I can say or do for him….please let me know…My heart hurts because his is hurting.

He has been through a lot of trauma in these last 3 weeks, seemingly. I suggest you do not bring up the situation. Its just a reminder of his sadness, and when he sees you, you want it be uplifting and a positive experience. You could go out to dinner, suggest a movie, or simply take a walk. I think at this point both of you miss one another and if he wants to talk about it, he will bring it up to you. But if you ask too many questions you may make him sad/angry/distant. So try to not bring it up unless he is ready to, and rent movies, hang out, have sex, go out for thai food, something to take his mind off of what he has gone through. Good luck

Isn't there something we can do to bring back jobs to the USA?
The USA became a prosperous nation 100 years ago because we were the king of globalization.

What is happening today? Jobs leaving the USA, entire factories are shutting down and moving to foreign countries.

100 years ago, entire factories were moving to the USA. That’s what caused that huge wave of immigration, because the factory owners often brought all their workers with them, paying their way in steerage on a steamer ship.

Why?

Tariffs. Tariffs on imports were the main source of revenues for the federal government. Income tax was unconstitutional until 1913, when Congress passed the Sixteenth Amendment. So tariffs were paying for most of the federal budget before then.

Tariffs raised the prices of imported goods, and it was harder for foreign factories to compete. So they moved their factories here, to avoid paying the tariff.

Tariffs were the successful way of managing globalization, and it turned the global economy in our favor. We became an indudstrial superpower exporter in 1880, and we became a creditor nation in 1914, because of 100 years of tariffs.

Tariffs also eliminated slavery. Look up the Tariff of 1828. Slave states hated tariffs. Slavery was holding us back, we had to abolish slavery before we became prosperous.

We ended tariffs in 1913 and replaced them with income tax, because exporters should not have tariffs. Once you reach that level of prosperity, you become vulnerable to retaliation from your customer nations. That’s why the Smoot-Hawley tariff backfired in 1930. We were still an exporter, and other nations retaliated.

But that all ended when we lost our trade surplus in 1980, and we became a debtor nation again in 1988.

It was time to go back to tariffs during the 1980’s. But the wealthy Wall Street Journal types were salivating over the idea of opening sweatshops in emerging Asian nations, so they raised the bogeyman of Smoot-Hawley to scare us away from tariffs.

The result has been an economy spiraling out of control. Our trade deficit is now equal to our total exports, which is more than ever in our entire history. We send out a trillion dollars a year on our trade deficit, which adds a trillion dollars of debt to our current account balance every year. The national personal savings rate was 4% in 1930, and it peaked at 10% in 1980. Today it is negative.

Our economy is now in crisis, unemployment is hovering around 10%, and our government is racking up staggering debts, from wars and stimulus giveaways that will never be paid back by the recipients. That means higher taxes in the future, which will only push us down deeper into the pit.

Free trade is making us a beggar nation.

Tariffs made us a prosperous nation.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what we’re doing wrong.
World Almanac 2009
Revenue Act of 1894, 1913
Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

We must do something to become more competitive in the global economy.

It’s either give up all our worker rights and citizen rights, or tariffs.

Giving up rights would mean losing our workplace safety, environmental protections, consumer protections, and all our human rights.

It’s foolishness to sacrifice all that just to save fifty cents on an item at Walmart.

It’s just not worth it.

Of course, Obama would just treat unfair foreign competition as a criminal matter and leave it to the courts to decide on each foreign company individually….

The US became powerful because of capitalism, no other reason at all.

Also, tariffs are only a small fraction of the reason jobs are being sent overseas. The biggest problem is minimum wage laws.

If we want to bring back jobs, the government first has to cut spending in 4 main areas- Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the military. We also need to end the Fed. After that, we can lower taxes to a reasonable level (no more than 5%). Then we could eliminate the minimum wage, and return to a capitalist economy that is not so heavily burdened by such massive wasteful government.

After that, return to the gold standard and stop allowing the US government to tax AT ALL. The only way government should be funded is through government bonds.
Protectionism is bad. Free trade is better. It’s not perfect, but definitely better.

With the more globally connected economy of today, protectionism won’t work. At best, we’ll isolate ourselves from global trade. American business can’t control the full cycle of manufacturing domestically, it’s too expensive to be competitive.

I’m totally against price fixing, it is artificial. Identify the real problems and fix them, don’t fix prices. Minimum wage and tarrifs are price fixing.
I with you but the problem with history it totally ignores the new global economy that never existed before anywhere. Tariffs are simplistic and antagonistic. We have to be smarter than ever before and find solutions that are mutually beneficial globally.

Also, we no longer have unlimited resources of land, materials and labor so we have to advance in technologies across the board to remain the primary player in the world.
Unions are the problem. All they did was drive up the wages too high to compete, they work for the employers anyway. That is why so many companies go overseas to get things made much cheaper!!
The problem with jobs is tied to the value of the dollar – which has been in a downward spiral due to the rising price of oil. the government has set financial policy to offset the outflow of dollars to OPEC nations, so the Euro and other currencies benefit. Europe and Canada pay about as much per liter of gas as we pay per gallon. Until we are willing to accept the going rate, the dollar will continue to slide and jobs will continue to go offshore.
